Offshore union RMT shares rising anger over refusal of Scottish authorities to again public inquiry into helicopter security

Offshore unions have been calling for a wider public inquiry into helicopter security within the North Sea, however Paul Wheelhouse mentioned in a letter to Lewis Macdonald that the Scottish Government is not going to be supporting requires a public inquiry.


Lewis Macdonald mentioned:
“It is deeply disappointing that Ministers have determined to not again the calls being made by the workforce and their unions for a full public inquiry into helicopter security.

“The Offshore Co-ordinating Group has beforehand highlighted that the helicopter journey to and from work is the largest single security concern for offshore staff.

“When so many staff are coming collectively to focus on security issues, it’s critical that each Scottish and UK Governments tackle board what they must say. That is why SNP Ministers at Holyrood should rethink this determination and again calls from staff for a UK-wide public inquiry into helicopter security.”

RMT General Secretary Mick Cash added:
“The Scottish Government’s engagement on offshore helicopter security is welcome however will probably be of little comfort to North Sea oil and gasoline staff whose confidence within the security of the offshore helicopter fleet has significantly declined.

The industrial S-92 fleet within the North Sea is being intensively used and the assessment of CAP1145 is not going to contain the commerce unions or Step Change in Safety, the impartial security physique for the offshore trade.

“We will not be assured that the CAP1145 assessment will look significantly at industrial pressures on security requirements and it gained’t deal with the justice deficit that households of victims of the deadly helicopter incidents within the final decade have endured from the Fatal Accident Inquiry course of.
